I use playsand and its fine. You might be thinking of the toxic gasses that sometimes build up in the sand when its not aerated enough.

A lot of pet store sand is sharp. But play sand is all soft and squishy and fun. <3

Playsand is fine. It's Black Beauty "sand" you shouldn't use because it's really iron slag.
