the two on the sides are actually 4 stems put together you may not see in the picture but the one on the left actually has a twist tie on it. Not sure if that could help at all, didn't even notice it until I put the plants in the tank.

Twist ties have metal inside the paper. I would remove them. Tie them together with basic sewing thread instead :)

okay well looks like I have to get some better lighting, 25-35 watt fluroscent lights I read work best. More than that works fine though, thanks.

So P.H. 8.4 or higher should I and can I lower it?

I saw this shed this morning and assumed the worst: Spike ate Thing 1 or Thing 2. Especially since yesterday was Spike's fasting day. But I found them both munching on some algae.

@bettasareawesome, did you purchase any liquid fert?

To lower your PH, you can get a piece of driftwood. The piece will slowly and naturally lower the PH level.

As far as lighting, do not get a bulb with higher wattage. I have a 15W florescent bulb in my 5.5 gallon and it is perfect. How big is your tank? It is likely that you can use the very same bulb I have.
