I'm gonna need CO2 to balance things out and get more plant growth. That idea doesn't work with a canister filter, either.

Those are Canister filters.
Definition: Canister filter is an aquarium filter in which the media are enclosed in a plastic canister located external to the tank, with water entering and leaving through hoses leading to and from the aquarium. Generally used for larger aquariums (40 gallons or more).

There's no point in getting a new filter though, I can just put more plants in the tank.
