What most articles fail to mention is that a lot of zoos can place stress on the animals. I HATE going to my state's capital zoo....they have a polar bear outside in a bunch of water, while people get to stand inside in conditioning in 100*F heat during the summer. Poor thing just swims in circles it's so stressed. :'(
I hate to see animals pacing and stressed in unnatural environments. Fortunately, there is no zoo or roadside petting zoo's here. The closest thing we have is a government owned sanctuary for residents of our Boreal forests (moose, caribou, owls, water things like otter and beaver, things that normally live here etc..) It's made up of wooden fences and stuff which is totally natural and the animals have natural environments and hiding spots. As you walk the park you can read the signs saying what each animal is and what it eats and stuff but you might not see them. I live in Newfoundland where the moose outnumber people 3:1 but I have never seen the moose at Salmonier Nature Park!! lol Ridiculous, I know. But the animals I did see are often found injured and cannot survive on their own, the park saves them and rehabilitates them and releases the ones that can be.
Matt tells me of a zoo in Nova Scotia which he thinks I will like but I am skeptic bc there are elephants and lions and tigers and monkeys. In Atlantic Canada... I don't know. I would hate to pay money and get depressed looking at them all.
Like you Pearl, I want to work with rehabilitating animals. I would not mind Toronto zoo or Calgary zoo or a rehabilitation park like the one here. I am afraid I would need science degree though :(
My degree is going to be in environmental and conservation biology. SO I might very well be able to one day fulfill my dream. I am also going to apply for the minor (at the university I am going to transfer to) where I can go to the big zoo's sister location around here, where they do their breeding/research and such, for a semester. That will be so exciting if I am able to do that :).
Some wildlife rehabilitation places around here look for volunteers. I don't know if they do something similar up where you are at Laki, but it might be worth looking into :).
If I drove... It's kind of far away! I would love to though. Feed the little foxes and toss meat to the lynx and falcons. And omg, the bald eagle!! He can't fly, he's been there for years and the part you walk through where he is is unfenced- if he was tame you could totally hold him.
I am moving to the mainland with my BA and BEd so... I would love to go to Asia and teach english!!! But we'll see what happens. In my lifetime I will get a car and be more accessible for volunteering.
. Those poor goldies! It sucks being in that situation, like how hard is it to clean some water! It's frustrating. And by cleaning it, you reinforced Grace's non-chalant behaviour, as with my mom. She thinks I will make her fish all better and will go back to treating him bad again. I should just tell my mom he died! Then hide him if she ever comes down!
she gets why but she is one of those "its just a 25 cent fish" person.
although they are not feeder goldies - there are something with the long flowing tails and round bodies
So cool going to a public aquarium and seeing a whole lot of fish that I recognize and know a lot about, even two fish that I have in my own tanks! There was even a wild betta, the betta albarimarginata. I didn't do so well identifying the saltwater fish though.
Just popping in. Will all more and answer PMs and visitor messages tomorrow when I'm on my comp and not my iPad.
lol not sure what this means but got a new purse and wallet has a b day present and honestly i needed them. wallet was about to go and was using a laptop bag to carry everything. and still managed to fit everything i had in the bag minus all the random papers, recites, pay stubs, happy meal toys, and bills i was carrying into the purse......
i fit my book, note book, lotions and such in there along with the wallet lol.
Haha, too bad they didn't give you some money to go in that new wallet.
Working with wild animals. Dangerous. A woman was killed yesterday by a lion at a reputable big cat sanctuary yesterday. Sadly, they shot and killed the lion too. It's a little unclear; either she was in the cage and she wasn't supposed to be or she was in the main cage cleaning and the lion escaped from a holding pen. The lion was even on Ellen when he was a cub.
