It includes the importation of any specifies of fish or reptile. Including bettas (not specified, but it only specifies certain species permitted). Meaning you could not import them simply to own or breed. It's a little ridiculous. Which means no fish keeping hobby. At all.

I don't see how it's preventing people from owning pets. From what I understood, it was speaking of protecting the wildlife. Not controlling what animals people have.

At the very least, it will make things beyond belief expensive. As in someone will have to be paid to document each and every animal, upload them to the public database that is talked about in the data base, and that's just two highlighted parts under section 7. Ordering animals online is already reaaaaally expensive, and as Matt said, no one is going to want to do any sort of business with an American buyer or seller at that point. There will be so much "red tape" involved that the chances of the animal staying alive will be decreased more than it already is.

I'm all for protecting wild life. It just annoys me when we have to mess with trade regarding other countries, especially when that is an already fragile thing as it is. Besides....acts like this only increase smuggling....which in turn only makes it worse on the animals in the long run.

Considering how much pets make of the American market through trade AND domestic, I doubt this bill will pass as is. Especially since they list Goldfish as acceptable. I've witnessed a lake in Texas overrun with goldfish.

We had some legislation they were trying to pass here in Australia a year or so ago that would have effectively crippled the aquarium industry. It was in regards to batch testing imported fish and if you only imported a small number of fish nearly your entire shipment would be killed for testing. For a disease they think is already in the country.

Luckily it seems to have been put on the back burner, but it was a worry for a while there.

You have to be careful about Governments and pet ownership. Sometimes all it takes is a slight change of wording and it can have serious repercussions.
