Nope, 'fraid not. That's considered inhumane. In theory it sounds like it would work but there's been scientific evidence that the fish stays awake throughout and thus experiences pain from the freezing. Fish, it seems, don't just peacefully fall asleep from hypothermia like we mammals do. Probably because they're cold-blooded? I don't know. Boiling is, obviously, considered inhumane too.

"Unacceptable methods of euthanasia include freezing, chopping, removing the fish from water, or flushing down the toilet. These methods are slow, torturous, stressful, or violent."

Won't be doing #1
We'll see about #2
I wish #3 were an option.

Thank you ALL for your concern, and sharing your knowledge. We'll be doing this whole thing differently next time.

I'll let you know.

Well, against all odds, Posiedon is still alive and swimming. I still have him in the salt and tannins QT and am changing the water daily, but he is doing remarkably well. I think I will set up the 10 gallon tank for him WITH a heater. I honestly did not think he would survive this. Thanks for all your help.

Wow, I'm so glad to hear that! It had been a while since a post so I thought he had passed. That's great.

We are transferring Posiedon to his new tank today. I will post pictures once he has settled in.

Yay! I'm thrilled he's doing well. And I love his name.
