Basically, anything that's not human is disposable. And we even treat each other as disposable. Chickens and cows that no longer give eggs and milk are eaten. Dogs and cats are drowned or abandoned. Even a valuable racehorse is turned into dog meat when it can no longer race.

Sigh. Now I'm depressed. I'm going to go kiss my fish. Oh please tell me I'm not the only one who kisses them through the glass. *mwah* I kiss my cats too.

I kiss my mice! I can't kiss the turtle, she'll give me salmonella :P I stroke my fishies with my finger, never tried kissies :D
The most depressing story ever was a horse that fell into an open hole and instead of coming to save him, the municipality people buried him alive because it was easier! And Peta doesn't bother, they're too busy dressing up people in leaves! I called so many of these animal organisations once when I found a kitten in a bad state, they all refused taking her saying that they don't do that kind of thing. S#*theads! The SPCA are the only people I trust . They took the kitten but she died in 3 days... She was too weak, had been pecked by crows, had no tail and she was emaciated.

I hear ya about PETA. But man, buried alive . . . that's just . . . brrr. My two biggest fears: burning alive and being buried alive. Poor horse. Poor kitten. But you tried to save it and that's better than what anyone else did.

Also- getting stuck in the rubble of an earthquake, tsunamis and floods and terrorists (especially terrorists O_o)... All of these things scare me, including what you said, except the buried alive thing... Anyway, too depressing, too dpressing! Lets change the subject here.
