Beta dying as we speak

I thought I figured everything out and had my beta under control. He had gotten sick because I bought him and listened to the pet store people about how to care for him and realized it was wrong. SO I bought a new tank, heater, filter, etc. He seemed to be doing better - eating, swimming around and now I just got home and he is floating on the top slightly turned to his side and it looks like he is dying. I have no idea what to do because it started with his color loss, scales/fins looking greyish green, etc.

I don't know what to do and feel he is dying and won't make it the night. His gills are barely moving.

Any ideas/help?

I also noticed he is having trouble swimming and tilts to one side. I feel horrible and wish I knew what to do to help him. He is just floating at the top doing this and I just put some dried blood worms in and he went to eat them but had trouble getting to them when they were near the wall of the tank. :( Poor Hubert I wish I knew how to save him.

Ok try testing the ammonia level in his water and do a water change, I'm not an expert but that sounds exactly like what mine did and the levels were off the chart. Do you have any aquarium salt? I would try to put some of that in after the water change. Is the water conditioned? What brand? Any other info you can come up with would help others here help you.

Sounds like ammonia poisoning. Test the water, or if you can't, do a 100% or 75% water change.
How big is the tank? How much times do you clean it a week.
For a 2.5 gallon tank, clean 50% twice and 100% once a week.

Thank you for the response. I m changing his water right now because I don't have anything to properly test the water. He is laying on his side completely and will only move around if he gets scared. I have ammonia clear to put in once I change the water. I feel horrible. I hope this saves him.

My tank is a 6.6 gallon and I literally just moved him in there 2 days ago when I learned betas don't belong in 1 gallon tanks. I got all the right supplies I thought, nutrafin plus/cycle, aquarium salt, etc. I just changed almost all the water and popped ammonia clear in and am now going to put some aquarium salt in.

Do you use water conditioner? There may be chemicals in the tap water that is harming the fish. I know mine has ammonia in it and god only know what else - it tastes horrible *bleh*

Yes I put in water conditioner. Is water conditioner the same thing that Ammonia clear is or does the Nutrafin water conditioner keep other harmful agents out as well? I just put in the aquarium salt, too and am letting it run. I put ammonia clear in and aquarium salt and now I am getting my water conditioner. I am really hoping I can save Hubert. :( Thank you so much for your help.

I'm not sure. There are so many brands out there. I use stress coat which helps with water conditioning and ammonia but it also has aloe vera which helps with fin regrowth. I have also used betta bowl plus. I was using them at the same time as I wasnt sure if I needed both or not but lack of money forced me to cut out the betta bowl plus and the fish seem fine without it. Plus I wasn't sure if I was putting too much chemicals into their water.

I have heard that if they have issues breathing, an air stone can help? I'm not sure how it works or why.

He is in a separate bowl right now while I run his tank. I put the aquarium salt in, Nutrafin water conditioner, ammonia clear, and the nutrafin cycle. He is trying to eat but his swimming is off and he has a hard time maneuvering it seems like. I put some ammonia clear in his water bowl and it seems to be helping while I wait for his tank to cycle. Do you see sudden changes the minute you properly balance his water environment to the right levels? He seems to be moving around more now ...
