fish/gallon ratio?

i was wondering if the 2.5G per fish rule that is used for males is the same for females.
I have a 20G tank that i am going to build a sorority in. I did the math and it said 8 females, will it be OK with 9?
Also, would it be to much to add an algae eater in with them?

What kind of algae eater? I would stick with just 8 at the moment. Over-stocking a tank can be no good. :/ Try 5-6 girls and maybe a couple cories? Otto's are also good with bettas.
I have a 40 gal with 3 girls, 3 cories, and a small pleco (I know he'll grow HUGE, but he's ok in there for now). :)
Hope this helps!

The general fish/water ratio is 1gal/in. of fish. Most males are about 2.5 inches there for the recommended minimum space for them is 2.5 gallons. Knowing the gal/in rule makes stocking a lot easier :)

Ok, so 9 females in a 20 gallon will be fine.

Right. They would have plenty of space. Even a bit of room for some tetras or something :)
