Exclamation do happy fish NEED clean water?

My little brother got a betta, named Fishy, and I also got a crowntail betta named Twitchy. My betta is at my grandparents, seeing as I am there most of the week. My brother's is at my parents, for the same reason. My betta's water is crystal clear and he is happily blowing little bubble nests, but my brother's fish's water is a brownish colour, I think it is it's poo. He is blowing bubble nests, which I read is a sign he's content. Should I clean his tank or just leave him be? (he has the same energy level as my crowntail, no difference in behavior.)

They don't exclusively make bubble nest when they're happy. They will do it even when they're sickly. Perhaps there is something off with the water your brother is using, but it shouldn't be brown unless there is serious lack of care being paid attention to it.

Bettas in bowls/tanks with no filter need water changes daily to every two days due to ammonia, a chemical that the fish excretes. if ammonia builds up it can eventually kill said fish.

well he is special needs, so he cannot clean the water, as he is also only 8. I always change the water when I come over on the weekend, but i assure you he is fed. I may put him aside and wipe out his tank tomorrow...

the water itself is not brown, just a bit 'foggy'. I will wipe his tank down tomorrow, thanks!

Crowntail,

I wouldn't worry too much about wiping off the tank. I would urge regular water changes. Don't kow how big your tanks are. If they are 3+ Gallons, 50% once or twice a week should be fine. If they are less than 2G, you need 50-100% water changes every couple of days...

Good luck!

the tanks are 2L (rather small, but at petsmart they sold them with water conditioner AND food) I heard somewhere that 100% water changes will shock and hurt the fish, though...

Well they are NECESSARY in 2L every day. 2L is about 1.5 quarts so you need to do 100% every day or get a bigger tank. You also need a heater but that isn't possible in 2L. If your brother can't change the water than you should get a tank that you only have to change once a week or so... 10 gallons or bigger, 5 gallons if you cycle...
