Welcome to the forum...

We really need the "Maintenance" information...how much and how often are the water changes and dechlorinator and other additives used.....

Right now-I would make a 50% water change for a couple of days and see if this will perk him up...

Can you post a pic...

Keep us posted.....

I believe he changes the water each weekend, not completely though.

On a 2.5 gal filtered tank...its needs twice weekly 50% water changes...1-50% water only and 1-50% to include substrate cleaning by vacuum or stir and dip to maintain water quality and fin health

Filter media needs a swish/rinse in old tank water a couple of times a month with a water change...

Hopefully it is just a water quality issue and a couple of daily 50% will take care of it and then start a regular twice weekly schedule.....make sure an try and keep the water temp within a couple of degrees in temp between new and old water and Always use dechlorinator with any water added....dose the dechlorinator for the full volume of the tank not just the amount of replacement water as a general rule.....

Keep us posted.....

I have a quick question/idea. My boyfriend and I had set up a new tank before he went to practice, If I were to put the sick fish in the new tank and add the proper amount of aquarium salt, would that help? Currently he's sitting in the little thing he was in when I got him and he just looks so miserable, I want to help.

Yes, AQ salt might help. I would recommend Epsom salt though, it is good for bloating, SBD, etc... And that's what your betta might have.

How much salt would be needed for one of the small cups that the fish come in when you buy them? We want to see if the small amount will help before introducing him into a larger environment.

Well, you aren't going to see an immediate response. Is the QT heated? Is the new tank heated? What size is the new tank etc...
You can premix the Aquarium Salt in a gallon jug (a clean milk jug works) 1tsp/gal if you want to treat him in the QT... I would add him to the new tank though since that is less stressful. Make sure you give him plenty of time to adjust to the new water though.
