Filtering a divided ten gallon?

So i'm setting up a 10 gallon to house 4 male bettas, so each guy will have a nice 2.5 gallons to himself and maybe a few shrimp.
My only question is how to filter it? I understand the dividers allow water to flow through them, but if i have one filter for the whole tank won't the betta in the section with the filter be in like...a whirlpool?
or will the dividers allow enough airflow for one betta to just have more current than the others, but for them all to have some current?

Also for dividers, i'm not sure if i'm gonna make my own or just use the pen plax ones made for 10 gallons

Depending on the filter you can probably either make it straddle a couple dividers or do some other kind of baffling.

You could also run it modified by using siphon tubes from it to the other sections. That sounds exactly as stated, you cut three lengths of vinyl 1/2 inch tube that each reach succeeding sections and fill them with water then using thumbs you turn em upside down into each section and line em up in the front well of the filter.

You can do the same thing with some vinyl tubing and some fittings and connect into the intake pipe and draw water from the other end of the tank then have the filter straddle one of the dividers.

In the end this is why splitting up tanks more than two-way can be a little difficult. Commonly people will get some kind of canister kit like the zoo-med/tom's and use spray bars on the return. Other solution is to give each boy a filter like a Whisper 3i with a sponge over the intake at the bottom, since the 3i come with their own air pumps you'll have four air pumps buzzing away in the back.

The easiest kit solution is the little canister filters, the cheapest is the five feet of vinyl tubing. Remember to cut the ends of the tubing at an angle.
