Help with Gravel Cleaner

I just got a Marina Easy Clean Gravel Filter for my 3 gal tank. It's a 10" long tube and I'm having problems getting it to suck up the gravel. You're supposed to move it rapidly up and down to get it flowing, but I've only had success on two out of many tries.

Any suggestions or tricks?

Is the entire "sucker" thing underwater? I've found that it's a lot easier when you do that.

This is how I usually do it:

not my video...I just decided to search for a tutorial..because if I tried to type out how I do it I would probably not make sense at all.

You could probably cut down the barrel piece a bit too. I use a mini aqueon siphon for my smaller tanks and it works lovely.

Thanks-

The top part does stick out of the water unless I tilt it sideways. It was the smallest I could find for my amazon order, but maybe it's too big. I thought it was ok since the picture on the back of the labeling has it sticking out.

Well, I don't think it makes *that much* of a difference, but it's what the instructions on mine said to do.
