after partial water change, I haven't noticed any tailbiting and tails has started to grow back slowly. Both boys seemed to calm down a little. Not sure if it was the amount of chemical released from almond leaf that was driving them nuts or sound of a filter (they did not have filter before) that they got used to now. I will experiment with a new leaf when I get back from holidays.
