Effective?

Has anyone used Melafix?

Sammich's recent overfeeding episode from a "helpful" co-worker threw off the balance of my tank, and caused him to get stressed.. I think he started hanging out too close to the intake of the filter - and his fins are wrecked and ragged now and I moved the filter to prevent that from continuing, but I think he's got some rotfin going on now.. few white spots on the edge.

Housing
What size is your tank? 1 gallon
What temperature is your tank? 74F
Does your tank have a filter? Yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? Powerhead filter air powered.
Is your tank heated? It is climate controlled. (can't do an actual heater as it would be too much.. I have one if necessary.
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? None

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? Aqueon Betta Food (pellets) and Freeze Dried Bloodworms for snack.
How often do you feed your betta fish? Small amount 1-2 days before a fast of 1-2 days...

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change? once to twice a week
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 20%
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Splendid Betta Complete Water Conditioner

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia: undetectable 0ppm
Nitrite: undetectable
Nitrate: undetectable
pH: 7 ish - might be more like 6.75
Hardness: 30ppm
Alkalinity: --

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? ragged fins, pale. white tips at the ends of the ragged fins.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? withdrawn, hiding out at the bottom of the tank. Lethargic.
When did you start noticing the symptoms? I knew immediately after I came back and saw the uneaten food someone left in the tank. Started water changes every other day.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? Did 2 water changes within the last week, added aquarium salt. Added Melafix fish first aid.
Does your fish have any history of being ill? 1st incident.
How old is your fish (approximately)? I've had him for 3 months now.

It's possible that he could be ripping them on the filter, or maybe on some plants or fin biting because of the stress, I would up your water changes to 50% daily with the salt and melafix. I have personally never used it, but I know a lot around here do with great success.

Thanks,

he's a lot more lively now that I put the salt in and the melafix. Should I increase the partial changes? The directions on the melafix said 7 day treatment and then a 25% change..

But since I had to take out the carbon from the filter, I'm thinking it definately needs to be changed daily.

Well it's probably best to follow the instructions on the package, which I don' t know what they are since I've never used it. Hopefully someone with experience with it will come by and give you advice. I'm glad he's doing better though!

Is your 1G cycled? If not, then you should do 100% changes every 2-3 days.

It's cycled. Though, I'm considering doing a fresh cycling of the tank.

Maybe take the filter out- seeing as it's only a 1gal, and that would solve your problem with the betta tearing his fins. :/

I've already resolved the filter issue. It's been moved and situated so that he cannot sit under it or behind it like he was. I'm considering upgrading to a 2 or 5 gallon... but probably going to wait it out. Need to research what tank I want.

^__^ good!
I recommend the minibow's. They're good, affordable, and cute!

I just posted in the Tanks and Habbitats forum.. I was looking at Marineland Eclipse System 3 Aquarium

I don't really like the undergravel filters they (minibow) come with.
