Creating a Useful Guide for Betta Types and Lingo

Hello there betta lovers, old and new!

I have been browsing the forums and noticed something almost shocking: There seems to be no terms list for new or learning betta owners. So I though it would be fun to create our own dictionary so that our members can easily find what we mean when we say things like VT, dragon scale, HMPK, etc. I have searched the internet and can't seem to find an easy list with all the definitions, so why not make our own?

Here are the definitions that I got from Wikipedia (feel free to add, alter, or contribute in any way!):

Boxtyzard: full moon shape with red flairs
Combtail: less extended version of the crown tail, derived from breeding crown and veil tails
Crowntail aka CT: highly frilled or jagged rays, extended spiny rays, also called fringetail
Delta tail: tail span is less than half-moon with sharp edges
Double-tail aka DT: the tail fin is split into two lobes and the dorsal fin is significantly elongated
Fantail: a rounded delta tail
Half-moon aka HM: large tail fin that forms a 180-degree or larger circle segment
Halfsun: Combtail with anal fin going 180 degrees, like a halfmoon
Plakat aka PK: Short-finned fighting style
Rosetail: halfmoon with so much finnage that it overlaps and looks like a rose
Veiltail aka VT: non-symmetrical tail, only two rays

I know I am missing a lot such as salamander, dragon scale, big ear, etc. I don't know enough about these to give a proper definition, so feel free to add definitions to the list and I'll edit them in here. Small pictures too, I guess, if its hard to understand without.

I hope this helps everybody out. :)

I may be missing something... but its not a good abbreviation if it is just as long as the actual word. Unless of course its describiing it... Does it mean "Half Moon ____ ____ Plakat"?
Personally I would go with DR for dragon, but I don't know the whole situation.

To the OP:
Thanks, as a new Beta owner I love it when someone will give me a basic chart like this. I look for it in every forum I join.

I never saw Delta abbreviated before. I'll see how many agree. I want to put HMPK up, is there a definition needed aside it being a half-moon bred with a plakat?

This is my opinion but starting to add colors in with fin abrivations might start to confuse people. Next thing you know your going to have, HMBFDSDTPK, lol. Dragon is a color not a type. Any betta can be dragon you just see it in HM's and PK's more then other fin types. Petsmart is just using dragonscale as a way to market them. They are Plakats. No different then what Pecto sells, just cheaper .

HMDSPK would be Half moon dragon scale plakat so ya its a bit shorter
HMPK is just a plakat with a Halfmoon spread tail

Dragons have a heavy build up of metallic on their scales to varying degrees. Normally it takes a couple generations to produce a thick layer of metallic thats seen on some bettas. Here is a link that explains it in more detail,
