Is this a male or a female?

Hello, my daughter and I are new to this type of Betta. When we bought it, we were told that it is a King Halfmoon. It is about 4 inches long. I was pretty sure it is a male, but then I saw some pictures online of males and females and now I'm not so certain.

Our questions are these;
Is this a male or a female? How can you tell which sex it is? What is the life expectancy? Do you know where I can find King Halfmoons to purchase (if it is online that's fine)?

My daughter is 8 and would like to try to breed this fish.

thats a pretty large betta I think its male to be certian you need to look for an egg spot this photo should help

Actually, I really don't know. Those ventrals look really long to be a girl, but I cant see a beard on it, and is it just me or does it look eggy?

Ohh was just about to ask what the egg spot looks like!!
That will come in handy for me!!

It looks like my male giant short fin (minus the long belly fin) here but I have no idea *as you can tell*

It's a male. I guessing it came from Petco? The petco kings all look like that, at least the ones I've seen. Hold a mirror up to him and see if you can get him to flare.

Aqua Bid is the only other place I've seen selling large bettas. On there they are called "giants".
