My First Betta

After getting a 5-gallon tank all set up and cycled thanks to so much helpful info on this site, I finally got my betta. I've had him a little more than a week now, and he seems to have settled into his new home very well. His name is Dude.

Here are some pics:

I know he is a VT, but I'm not really sure what color he would be classified as. He actually has a purple shimmer to his body when exterior light hits him and his tank light is off. He is super friendly, and practically tries to swim through the glass to see whoever happens to walk by his tank. I picked him out at my LFS because most of the bettas were sitting there hardly moving, but this guy was extremely active and following me back and forth whenever I walked by him.

Here is a pic of his tank while I had it cycling:

I may take the leaf hammock out eventually because I haven't seen him use it at all. I'll give it a month or two though I think. He seems to like his cave, but I don't see him in it very much because he gets so excited and swims up and down at the front of his tank whenever he sees someone.

Anyone have a remedy for the betta bug? I'm already kind of thinking about getting another one .

There is no remedy... that's why we are here. The only thing you can do is run far far away...

Also thats a nice looking fish + tank, I'm sure he will be happy in there.

He's amazing! Actually they're not that rare, I've seen 2 in walmart, and some at other fish sale places (lfs's lps's) He sounds like he's in good hands. I'd be cautious with the hammock thing, they have a wire in them that have gutted some people's fish on the forum...

Congrats on getting Dude! He's a beautiful Orange Dalmatian! Gorgeous!

Your tank looks great, I love the log in the middle, its beautiful!

For the hammock, if you feed him over the hammock everyday for a week or two, he should figure out what its for. That's how I got my bettas to use it! Just be careful not to bend the wire, as there have been stories of other member's fish getting stabbed by a wire that ends up poking out of the leaf.

There is no cure for the betta bug. I started with one male four years ago and said thats all, and now I have seven! I like your set up and he's gorgeous!
