Gamma rays and my betta

I noticed the other day that my betta had a big hole in his tail. I am talking about the very back tail of a betta. Steve is a normal veiltail betta. He lived at wal-mart before i bought him. His tail went from having a small hole to splitting into two separate but smaller tails.

Is this normal for bettas as they get older? I do not see anything that looks unnatural about this split. Steve is also very healthy and happier since I took the ghost shrimp out of his tank.

or actually it could be that he tried flaring, and split his tail on accident due to the hole that was already there. what worries me is the original hole..
