Identify this fish.

I just had the craziest incident with a Petsmart manager. They have a dragon scale cup with a crown tail female in it. I watched this fishes behavior for close to 10 minutes before I decided to make my case with her about the mispricing on it. I don't claim to be an expert I am trying to get back into breeding them. The price difference between a dragon scale and a female is $8.99 to $2.99, significant. She changed the price on it giving me the female price only after argument and attitude and admitting she knows nothing about the fish. Truly poor customer service. I have no problem going in there and paying the difference and withstanding the embarrassment, IF I AM WRONG.

I gave her the scenario, what if someone picked a $8.99 dragon scale and swapped the lid of their fish with that of a female betta $2.99. Leaving someone (like me) to want the female who was left with the mismarked lid. She asked why someone would do that, duh bc some ppl aren't honest. She also said it has never happened before, how would she know if it had?

I'll have to upload pic later it's not letting me from my iPad.

Look at how the "male dragon scale" reacts to the crowntail. Has to be a female, and you can see her stress stripes showing. Looks more submissive than aggressive

Or the people who label them in the first place could have made a mistake. I once saw a crowntail male in a cup that said veiltail male, and crowntails are more expensive than veiltails.

I'm glad you were able to have the price corrected, though.

I can't be for sure as the pictures aren't very clear, but it actually looks like a plakat male to me, and a very young one at that! Sometimes they don't flare right away when they're young, they kind of have to grow into themselves. Also, he may not be in the best of health depending on how long he's been at the store. If he doesn't feel well he may not be as inclined to flare. Males can get stress stripes just as readily as females can, and I imagine he was a bit stressed from the ride from the store to your home and being in a new place. To me, his anal fin looks much longer than a female's would be, although it may just be the angle. Check for an oviposter, and if his ventral fins are quite long then you can be sure its a male. But it may yet be a female, its pretty hard to tell on some of them!!!! Also, petsmart doesn't sell dragonscale females so that also has me leaning towards male, but it is possible that a female may have slipped in to the batch! Female or male, you have a gorgeous fish there!!! And that crowntail is stunning, he looks huge!!!!!

Ovipositor! dang that's what I forgot to look for. And ya know what!?! It has one! And I understand that it could have been placed in the wrong cup from where ever it came from, she said they come directly from where ever already in the cup (apparently they don't do the little baggies anymore) but she was unwilling to accept a mistake could have been made.

Hmm that is rather unsensible of her to think that there is no possibility of a mistake. However, even an oviposter isn't a tell tale sign that you have a girl, young males sometimes have them too!!!!! They're tricky, these bettas lol!!

Well now that debate is over with. I'm ready to get them settled into their new home.

Actually, it does really look like a PK dragon to me. I can see why she put up a fight. :P I would say at the very least (from your photos) that it's not a crowntail... MAYBE combtail but if someone asked me to identify this based on the pics alone I'd have told them it was a PK dragon and sex is hard to say.
