Water change question.

Im about to do my first water change on a 2.5 gallon tank in a few days. Since I am running a filter I only plan to 50%. My question comes when I add water conditioner. Should I only add enough conditioner for the new half of the water or should I add the total amount for the 2.5 gallon tank?

I usually add enough for the whole tank. It kind of depends on what kind of water conditioner you're using. The one I use, API Stress Coat, also neutralizes ammonia so any extra that goes in is used to take care of excess ammonia. Most other water conditioners don't neutralize ammonia though. If you're not sure how much you want to add, I would suggest adding enough to treat the new water you are putting in plus maybe a drop or two extra to be safe. And just in case you weren't aware, add the water conditioner to the new water BEFORE you pour it into the tank. Good luck.

Actually in a 2.5 uncycled tank, you HAVE to do 100% WCs. So in a 2.5 g with a filter do a 100% change weekly. Preferably do a 50% and 100% change weekly. Because 50% changes just have the ammonia with more constantly being added. For water conditioners, I use top fin, but prime is also highly suggested.

But if the tank is cycled, I've heard 100% changes aren't good. Confused am I.

Yes but I'm assuming a 2.5 g isn't cycled. I think u may need to reread the cycling thread

I'll find the thread. Anyways, I never do 100% changes if I can help it, stresses the fish out and I get all those dumb gas bubbles. I do 95% changes.
