Betta's tail is splitting! help?

My 6 month old VeilTail male betta has been doing wonderfully.

UNTIL, this morning I noticed his VT is splitting from the center of the outer end. it looks like it is going to rip right down to his body and become a double tail!

there is only one cave in his tank, 3G and no plants real or fake.

there is no other sign of anything wrong just the clean tail splitting.

what is wrong with him?!

please and thank you :(

It might be the starting of fin rot...
Since you only do 100% once a week on a 3 gal (which you need to be doing more), that might be the issue. You should be doing one 25-50% and one 100% in a 3 gal. once a week.
OR it could be him just eating at his fins. :/
In either case, what you can do is treat him with Aquarium Salt (API is recommended) 1tsp/per gal (so 3 tsp in your case) for 7-10 days with 100% water changes each day. This will help with fin re-growth. :)
Hope this helps!

Do you think you could get a picture? That would help a lot too.

Hmm, yeah it look like there is some black edging on his tail.
Nothing like some fresh water and AQ salt won't heal.

He's beautiful btw :)
