Question Am I feeding my Diggy too much?

I've got a beautiful red male delta tail about a month ago, and my three year old son named him Diggy.
I bought Aqueon Betta Pellets with him, and it says "feed several times a day in small amounts that will be consumed by fish within three minutes."

So, on the first day, I gave him one after one for three minutes, counting how many he eats.
He ate 25 pellets!
From then, I give him 20-25 pellets twice a day (so, 40-50 a day), everyday.
He eats them all within 3 minutes. A few drops to the bottom of the tank, which I net out afterwards.

He has a slightly bulky belly, but not apparently awkward, and doesn't seem to suffer constipation; he poofs a lot.
He is healthy and active for over a month.

Yesterday, surfing the web, I realized that other people give their Betta fish just 4-5 pellets a day! And even fast a day per week?

OMG! My Diggy eats 10 times more.
Is he eating too much? I feel terrible if I'm mistreating him.
But again, he looks healthy (I think he grew up quite a bit over a month).
For those of you who haven't seen Aqueon pellets, it's about 1/16" (~1mm).

I feed the 2 of my bettas that actually eat pellets 3 in the morning and 3 in the evening and I've wondered if thats too much. I just read somewhere that their stomaches aren't much bigger than those pellets. Hopefully someone has a better answer for you.

I feed mine two pellets daily. I read (but can't remember where) that a betta's stomache is smaller than his eye.

i'm quite surprised that your betta isn't dead. o____o;

i only give mine four pellets a day. i've read in a thread somewhere
in this forum that their stomachs are the same size as their eyes.

wow, about 40 to 50 a day? i was wondering if four was too much, since
some people only feed two. i honestly don't know why your betta seems to
be doing fine.

i've heard that if you go on vacation, they can not eat for about two weeks and
they'd be okay. i've also read that the instructions on betta fish foods almost
always are incorrect and instruct you to feed too much.

but, i honesty don't know. i think if you bring his food quantity down to about 4-5
pellets a day, he would also be fine. but then again, i can't explain why your
betta eats that much and seems to be healthy. haha hopefully, someone can
give you a clearer answer. c:

Well... I thank God that he isn't dead.
I'll definitely reduce feeding, so I didn't give him anything since last night.
I think I'll fast him for two or three days.

But, he is, man, furiously angry at me!
Whenever I go close to him, he becomes furious and looks like saying "give me food right now!"

I'm wondering if it's okay just to cut feeding by 1/10 suddenly, or if I should reduce the amount gradually.
Any opinions?

I feel terrible if I abused him.

he might eat them and expel the waste quickly. lately mine hasnt done that in the QT tank. its almost always in the glass cup he sit in while he waits for during a water change. he always lets it out in one shot. thats my theory atleast.

o.0...seriously...you have got to post a pic of your fish! I have never heared of a betta the could eat 50 pellets in one day and not...like expload or something 0.o

On a more serious note, your betta should only be eating about 3 to 4 pellets a day, I mean, A human could probably eat about 5 or 6 times what one is supposed to eat and do fine for a while, but eventually the unburned calories and stress on his digestive tract would catch up with him...

Long story short, he will live much longer and happier on much less

haha does he actually look angry, or is he giving you a
happy food dance, asking for food?
haha

i was wondering about that too. i think reducing it gradually
would be the best way to go, but i'm not 100% sure.

it's not like you meant to give him that much, so i don't think
you abused him. don't worry, i think he'll be fine. c:

Overfeeding your betta can lead to constipation...something that bettas are prone to and can kill them. I have had several that have become constipated and shortly after, died. He may be a young betta and at the moment can handle the extra better than an older fish.

Your betta is not angry for not feeding him. He is used to getting food when you show up and will come looking for it. But betta are pigs and are always looking for food. Bettas are also very curious fish and on this site and others I have read that you can even train them to do little tricks. So make his time "busy" time and just give him something entertaining to do or look at. Mine even comes to see the cat when he comes into the room
