Tail Split!?

Ok so this morning I get up and I noticed that my dear Tiberius' tail now has a huge split down the middle I don't know how this could have happened. I'll post pics after filling out the care fourm thingy...

Housing
What size is your tank? 5 gallon
What temperature is your tank? Consistent 80F
Does your tank have a filter? Yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? No
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? None

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? TetraBetta Floating Mini Pellets
How often do you feed your betta fish? 2 pellets in the morning and occanaly 1 freezedried bloodworm at night. I also fast him and our other betta on fridays.

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? Once a week
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 50%
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Jungle Start Right Complete Water Conditioner

Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters? No

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? His tail has split in two
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? It hasn't
When did you start noticing the symptoms? This morning
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? No, but I plan to move him to the Quarentine bowl so I can change his water
Does your fish have any history of being ill? He has had bloat twice in the past 3 weeks.
How old is your fish (approximately)? I got him on June 23, 2011.

Update: I put Tiberius in the QT bowl and did a 100% water change and throughly rinsed everything out and added 1tablespoon of aquarium salt while I filled the tank back up and added the Complete Water Conditioner. Tiberius is still in the QT bowl, what shouldI do next and what do you think happened?

It looks like a snag to me more then any illness. He might have gotten his tail hooked on something in the tank and then it pulled apart. Like pulling an earing through an ear [but a lot less painful]

If there is no other signs of illness I'd just check his fixtures in his tank to see if I could find out what did it and put him back in his home. Make sure you do frequent water changes to avoid infection and to promote healing c:

Ok thank you! Could it have gotten snaged on the intake of his filter? I just got the tank w/ filter last week and otherwise he has had all of the same decorations.

Maybe - though I'm more inclined to think that maybe he just nicked something just right as well. The rip might have started off a little smaller and then grew under the weight as well.

My VT Commie had a similar thing happen to him once and it just started to heal right back up with some proper care.
