New Tank New fish.

Alright McDerppington is resting in davy jone's locker. I was pretty upset about it especially running around trying to save him. pretty much died in my hypothetical arms. :( but the guy at petland hooked me up with another fish and a sweet deal. I bought a $30 filter and got a 10g tank for fweezies! I got a heater too but i forgot the darn thermostat!

So questions I have the water in the tank I've put the conditioner in it it's been sitting on my nightstand for about 45 minutes. I havent turned the heater on yet cause i dont want soup de la betta! Could I turn the heater on after i get the thermometer? This is my first "big tank" are there any other steps I should take to before introducing my new fish to it?

Pic of new guy.

I would put in the filter and heater, and let everything run overnight before adding New Guy. Get a thermometer though and check the temp before you put him in ;) That should only take a few minutes.

+1

I'd also suggest picking up a gravel siphon, an API liquid master test kit, and starting your research on the Nitrogen Cycle. Here is a nice little page to start on, explains the process fairly well I think. You'll wanna do research on how to Cycle with fish however....it will require more frequent water changes and take a little longer then a fish-less cycle, but with a single betta in a 10 gallon it won't be such a huge deal. :)
