Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? His apperance is the same, he is a bit of a tail bitter.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He is very lethargic and stays close to the top of the tank as if he is having trouble breathing.
When did you start noticing the symptoms? Last night
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? I haven't done anything but float him in a cup in his tank
Does your fish have any history of being ill? His only problem has been his tail bitting.
How old is your fish (approximately)? He's been with me maybe 10 months.

He hasn't eaten since yesterday morning at which time he seemed fine. The other fish in the tank perfectly normal pretty much ruling out lack of oxygen in the water, also there is an air stone.
All help much appreciated I don't want to lose him :(

Hi. People will need more information to help! You didn't fill out the maintenance part. How often and what % of the water do you change? What, if anything, do you add to the water? Also, do you test the water? Is so, what type of test do you use (strips or liquid?) and what were the last results? (What is "normal" depends on how you usually maintain the tank!)

As I stated, the water quality is fine, which is made apparent by the fact that the other fish has absolutely nothing wrong with him, but 50 percent water changes are made every other week. I use strips AND liquid and the water quality is right where it should be. Nitrite and Nitrate at zero, ph 7

I'm sorry to hear you lost your fish. I wish we could have helped you. :( In the future, for a 10g with no filter and two fish, you need to do 50% every week, not every other week. Bettas are carnivores and that means they have a big bioload in comparison to their size. You stated the nitrate and nitrite readings but it's the ammonia reading I am most concerned about.

I do at least a 25% change in my cycled filtered 10g with 3 small tetras in it. I would suggest more water changes next time. I'm so sorry he's gone :( It's not easy at all. Rest Peacefully Betta Boy :(
