Fin Rot or Biting Tail

So I had to come home from my dorm in highschool where I kept my betta in a 5 gallon tank. But my house only has a 1 gallon tank, so I put it in there. It lived fine for about 2 weeks. Last night I looked at it, and the tail was fine nothing was wrong. Pretty much overnight, the end of the tail looks shredded. It's still swimming fine, but I don't want it to be dying before I do anything about it.

I'm still fairly new to this, but I'm going to say biting, because I had the same problem: I left for 45mins, came back, and his tail and fins were a wreck. From what I understand Fin Rot takes longer to do that kind of damage.

Tail biting is a result of boredom and pent-up aggression. Likely he isn't taking the downscale very well. Try playing the mirror game with him so he has an outlet for his frustration, and upgrade to a bigger tank when/if you can. Some of them are moody like that... I had mine in a 1.8 and he had a hissy fit, so I had to upgrade him.
