How do you clean terra cotta pots?

I got three terra cotta pots yesterday from home depot. How do I go about cleaning? I don't know how I'm gonna plug up the hole either... Thanks!

I beat the bottom out of my pots with a screw driver and a hammer :) Small quick blows, take off small chunks so it doesn't break the pot :) Make sure to sand the edges!

I rinse mine off in hot water. I am sure you could soak them in hot water for a bit if you're really cautious.
