Question no flare(bit of a coward too:))

my blue betta in the pic never flares.
not for a mirror not even when i put him next to my goldfish and they had a clear view of each other.

i would really like it if he flared
i heard it's good exercise and it looks cool
even if it was for a short time it would be nice
what to do?

Some Bettas flare more than others...but to be sure nothing is wrong...have a few questions....

How long have you had him, has he ever been sick and/or treated, how old is he, how big is the tank, how much and how often are the water changes, filter, live plants, additives used, appetite, water temp......

What about water temp and additives used like dechlorinator, appetite, live plants, filter.....

IMO/E....1gal unfiltered tank is fine to keep the Betta in as long as you make the needed water changes and maintain a stable temp....

In a 1gal unfiltered tank-I would make twice weekly water changes....1-50% and 1-100% to maintain water quality....provided that you don't overfeed and remove any uneaten food within a reasonable time...

Nutrition-good quality varied diet fed in small frequent meals.....

Sometimes if he is too cold or kept in poor water quality they will not flare and/or be very active in general......

um i use drinking water (not from the tap, from the store like bottled water) which he seems to think is fine. I don't add anything. He used to have a small plastic plant but i though it was too sharp and removed it.
He has 3-4 pellets of Aqueon Betta Food a day. I clean his tank once a week. He always eats his food and never lets it sink.
It might be too cold though.

I would use your tap water with dechlorinator.....the bottled water may be filtered tap water and still contain chlorine/chloramine and the filtering process removes the needed minerals the fish needs for long term health....to change him over to dechlorinated tap be sure and do a slow acclimation to both temp and chemistry by making 25% water changes every hour for 4 hours

I would get a thermometer and check the water temp.....your goal is to maintain a somewhat stable temp in the 76-80F range.....you may or may not need a heater.....but its a good idea to have one on hand.....I use the small preset tetra brand for my 1gal tanks...and have worked well for me...
