Should I Do This?

Okay. I really wanted to only keep one tank - really. Just one. So I went... and bought a baby fish. Now I don't regret the fish but I really don't want two tanks. [I have the spare tanks for the baby already so no real worries...]

I have another tank running with a Betta fish and some Oto Cats.

I was thinking I could buy that [lovely priced] 29 gallon and divide it 20/9. 9 gallons for the baby fish and 20 gallons for the Otos and Xochi. That way I can keep one tank and the fish I want.

What do you think? [I think I'm also making excuses to get the tank but...]

I think it's up to you, how much space you have and what your own personal limitations are.

It sounds like you are set on getting the 29 gallon.

What kind of baby fish did you get?

The tank is 30 inches across. The space I have my other tank on is... 31.5 inches across so since I would be changing it out I have the perfect space for it ha ha.

I think if the 29 gal is really what you want, go for it.

Why don't you get a 20g long instead? They are not that high, which would be easier to divide :) They are the same length as the 29g though.

29g - 30" x 12" x 18"
20gL - 30" x 12" x 12"

Well its more out of concern for giving the Oto's the room they desire. Since 20 gallons is recommended for them in the first place. I think if I took them away from Xochi he'd have fits. He spends way too much time hanging out with them.

It's your tank :) But keep in mind another member on here nearly had a few fatalities with trying to divide a taller tank. Just trying to save you issues and heartach.

I am pretty sure they mean the 20g Tall when they suggest 20g. 99% of the time, it's the length of the tank that matters. A 20g tall is only 24" length wise. A 20g long is 30". Not many fish need all that height.

True. Though they do make dividers for 29 gallon tanks prefab so I was thinking I'd test those and modify if need be.

Thats a good point on the length - my hold up on that is the 29 is considerably cheaper at the moment then a 20gL setup.

Haha I don't mean to scare you at all! I'm just overly cautious with everything, and nothing bad has happened here safety wise. I don't know if it's because I'm cautious or because nothing really would have happened!

Buy the 29g and try it out :) If it doesn't work, send er back.

Okay I'm feeling better about the 29. Mostly because I'm going to special order a divider [plexi glass or glass haven't decided yet] through my father who works for a company that deals with the stuff constantly all special orders. He thinks with plexi I might be able to get 50% water flow with the slits small enough to be safe. And then seal it into place. That bugger will /never/ move on accident.

It will be a pretty penny [under 100 and could be even good priced if plexi] but worth it for the looks and well, safety.
