Old but active betta struggling to eat

Ugh, my old betta always seems to be at death's door (he's getting close to 4 years old). This time it's eating. He will take a pellet, visibly try to swallow it (jerking his head around) and then it will pop back out of his mouth. He seems to really want to eat. I got him to eat some pea bits last night and am waiting till tomorrow to try feeding him again. Any thoughts on what this could be? He is still behaving normally and looks normal otherwise.

Sometimes when my betta chews floating food it floats out of his mouth, and maybe he's so old he's too lazy to go get it? Maybe give him something that sinks or that he likes enough to chase down.

Hi rokin3, I'm sorry to hear that your betta isn't doing too well :(
It might be because he's getting older... :/ Try crushing up the pellets with the blunt side of a kitchen knife and crushing them into small pieces so he can eat them.
His age might be catching up with him. The average lifespan for a betta is 2-4 years. I'd say you're doing a fine job of taking care of him if he is 4! ^^

Hope he gets better :)
