Exclamation acting strange

so Ive had my Betta for about a week it's a double tail and I just got a half moon yesterday I have a ten gallon tank and a divider for them I noticed the half moon betta (aqua) had been acting weird, just laying on the bottom of the tank seems depressed, playing dead and today my double tail was acting the same and he never acts like that, i noticed that they only use one fin to swim sometimes also if they flare at eachother i can only see aqua's left side gill. when the double tail Betta (sparky) acts dead at the top of the tank and I move him he darts and ends up crashing into everything. I wanna know what's wrong I don't want them to die /: FYI: I do have a filter & a heater set to 80'.

maybe the ammonia level of .5 is stressing them out??

whenever my fish played dead, it was cause there was something off with the water chemistry. However I am no expert. i'm sure someone will be along shortly to give better advice.

That is correct Tikibirds...the ammonia level can stress them.....

I would make a couple of daily 50% water only changes for 2 days and see if this will perk them up...then get on a regular schedule of 50% with substrate vacuum weekly and anytime you have ammonia, nitrite 0.25ppm or greater make a 50% water only change....

How long has the tank been running and is it cycled....do you have a nitrate reading and what kind of testing products are you using.....

for about a week , of what I thought it was cycled but I've only been checking for ammonia and ph. I don't have nitrate I'm using API testing kit

If it has only been running a week-it most likely doesn't have an established nitrogen cycle, the Fish-in cycle can take about 4-8weeks...but no worries.....along with the regular scheduled weekly 50% with vacuum...Add a second 50% water only in the week...until you have nitrate 5-10ppm without any spikes in ammonia and/or nitrite.......

Give the filter media a swish/rinse in old tank water with a water change a couple of times a month to maintain good water flow for the nitrifying bacteria....
