filter problem?

I have a Tetra Whisper Internal Filter for 1-3 Gall Aquariums. I have had it for just over a month, and i change the cartridges every week.

I was just watching my little guy after doing a 100% water change and he of course left a little present in his sparkly clean water.

I watched the filter suck up his little "present" and just spit it back out 3 times! how can something that size just go right through the filter?! Is it catching anything at all?

Could there be something wrong with it? I just read the instructions again and I am 99% sure it's installed properly.
