My male beta

Housing
What size is your tank? 10gal
What temperature is your tank? 82 day/78 at night
Does your tank have a filter? Yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? Yes, though mostly used over winter months
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? Female beta, 1inch chinese algae eater, and a 1 inch pleco (the chinese algae eater and pleco are going to be transferred to a 55 gallon tank soon as its finished cycled in about 2 weeks.)

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? beta pellets
How often do you feed your betta fish? Once a day

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? 1 time every two weeks
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 25-30% 2nd week and 50% 4th week
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Betta water softener
Water Parameters:

Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters? Yes
Ammonia: Unknown, test strips don't test for that
Nitrite: Off the charts (starting to wonder if I bought bad test strips)
Nitrate: 20
pH: 7.8
Hardness: 150
Alkalinity: 150

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? No change in color. Beta has always been pale
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He seems extremely lethargic
When did you start noticing the symptoms? 2 days ago
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? I put him in a double breeder box to make sure he's eating good. He is.
Does your fish have any history of being ill? Not sure...just recently got him
How old is your fish (approximately)? I've only had him about 4 days now

I got a 10 gallon tank with a young female beta and a male beta. Both are veiltails. Each of the betta's have their own territories. About 2 days ago, I noticed the male seemed lethargic. The female would occasionally come up and nudge him, and the male would smack her and send her off. When I noticed the male was lethargic, I stuck the male in the breeder box. I did this about 2 hours ago. I just looked just now and the male is laying on his side but still breathing. I have no medication and no way to get to the store to buy some.

I did the 50% water change about 3 hours ago. Female is swimming around fine. She's not showing any signs of stress or anything.
