My Grandfather, the fire cheif

recently, my brother found a picture that touched me. As long as I can remember my family has always had something to do with saving lives and helping people. The list below.

Cousin: nurse aide
Aunt: nursing home
Mother: assisted living home
Dad: builds firetrucks
Aunt: preschool teacher
Uncle: Fire Cheif and paramedic
Grandpa: Fire cheif and paramedic
Uncle: builds fire trucks and is a volunteer firefighter
2 brothers-in-law: both paramedics and firefighters

Needless to say I have been introduced to paramedic and fire safty since I was little. My Grandfather started it all. He drove this family into helping people and was well respected when he passed. His funeral procession looked like a president had died with residents, police, firefighters and paramedics lining the roads and saluting him. He was amazing and magical to me. He retired from firefighting when I was about 3-4 years old. The newspapers quoted him saying, "I have five beautiful grandchildren to play with!" as the reason he was retiriing. Back to the picture, this picture would have been taken in the 60's when my dad was little. He was also the first person to be trained in the county to be a paramedic and a firefighter and I am proud to say he is my grandfather. This was assumed taken after a fire as you can see ash on him. He is the one who's face is visible. I just wanted to share and remind you all to thank the hero in your life wether they are living or passed.

He was a great guy. I am proud to say my Uncle (his son) took over the same role he had in the same county. It's a nice tradition and I hope it continues. He was really great though. I used to love watching him work on his candy apple red 57' chevy belair in the garage. Wow, what a car.

The guys that used to work with him told funny stories about him at his funeral when he first started. He was a driver and they said they used to have to shake him awake because he would fall asleep at the wheel and head straight for a pole or miss their turn. Even with the siren going he would fall asleep.
I tell you my grandmother deserves a medal of honor in this too. She raised three crazy boys and a daughter on next to no money and had to worry about him every day.

Thanks everybody and Dramaqueen, it's a nice thought to have that kind of legacy. That reminds me, my other uncle used to be a police officer. I forgot to put him in there.

Oh and what about those who served our country in the military? My dad was a Vietnam vet and was in the Marine Corps for 22 years. My brother was in the Navy for 6 years and I had several great uncles that were in the Army.
