Do you have to cycle a tank?

Hey, I haven't gotten a betta fish yet but I was a little confused on "cycling" a tank. I plan of getting a 2.5 gallon tank with a filter/heater. Does it need to be cycled? How often should I change the water? Thanks!

from what i've been told, if you have a tank that's under five gallons, you don't have to cycle it, because it's difficult to cycle.

you should probably do one 50% or one 100% water change each week.

here's a thread i made on the same topic on cycling: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=76269

Okay cool. I can do a water change once a week no problem.
