Update: I have actually gone ahead and split my girls up for now since the 6.6 gal is a bit small for 4 girls. Little Claire (from the video) seems to be doing better since I put her by herself. I have a feeling she was getting used to her new tank and 3 tankmates - maybe she was freaked. I was thinking it was too much stress on the little girl and I would lose her. Hopefully a bigger tank and 1 more girl betta will help them all feel comfortable

mjoy, good call. Even though the 6.6g is long, it's still smaller than a 10g in all other proportions. I hear the minimum for a sorority is 10g. I have five girls in my 10g. Claire was probably a little shocked at the transition and getting used to things, hence the laying on the bottom and breathing hard. I'm glad to hear she has perked up, she's very cute.

Unhappy Bummed! Lost 2 girls over night :(

I'm really sad that I've already lost 2 of my girls (named Kate and Claire). They were the youngest/littlest ones. I now have 3 in there and the 3 that are left are a bit older and seem to be doing fine. But I know I need a couple more to put in there. My guess is that I should get ones that are about the same size/age instead of the tiny girls that Kate and Claire were. ?

Housing
What size is your tank? 10 gal
What temperature is your tank? currently 76-78
Does your tank have a filter? yes - not plugged in yet - too strong
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? no
Is your tank heated? yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? there were a total of 5 yesterday, now 3 left

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? tried to feed, but never ate
How often do you feed your betta fish? N/A

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change? new tank set up
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? NA
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Stress coat conditioner

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
pH: 5.5
Hardness: 0
Alkalinity: 0

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? NA
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? as of last night laying by themselves- just figured shy and not used to the new tank, now dead
When did you start noticing the symptoms? yesterday/today
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? no
Does your fish have any history of being ill? Not sure.
How old is your fish (approximately)? Both seemed to be approx 2-3 months old

:( I'm sorry you lost Kate and Claire, mjoy. Did you acclimate them? It could be they were sick to begin with, unfortunately. How were they acting in the store when you bought them?

It does help to get girls roughly the same size as the ones you have but it's not absolutely necessary. I've had success introducing a girl larger than the others and she turned out to be sorority leader but another poster, Fightergirl, got two big girls and one proved too aggressive for a sorority. When picking them out, I would pay more attention to temperament than size. Put the girl(s) you're looking at next to another girl and see if they flare at each other in their cups. See which girl seems the most aggressive. If she's on the bigger side and acts aggressive, maybe avoid her but if she's the same size as the girls you have, it might work if you keep her in a netbreeder for a few days so the others can get used to her.
