Flaring?

When my fish flares, he doesn't do the thing where his gills seem to "pop out". He just spreads his fins out, except for his dorsal fin, which just sticks up. Would this be considered flaring?

Consider it like a "half flare." ;) You'll learn over time to read your betta's body language. I tend to think of those sorts of flares as being just more alert, but of course I am inserting my human thinking here, lol. Mine doesn't pop out the gill plate for everything; sometimes he just goes all puffy when he is stalking something outside his tank that he is curious about. I place things near him to keep him entertained. He does do a full flare though if he sees his reflection.

Turbo does the "half-flare" all of the time...at everything. I've heard that flaring is good for bettas but that it can also stress them out. He may be seeing his reflection on the tank. He stalks his reflection on the heater.. I've never seen him do a full flare, though.. Even when I put a mirror up to him. He just kind of stared at it, like "What do you want? -_-".

They are all different. Some are more mellow than others. ;) If he is stalking everything he might settle down a bit once he is more used to his surroundings; or he may not. If you are concerned about it you might need to adjust the lighting in the room so he isn't getting a mirror effect from the glass.

Certainly sounds like a cute and spunky little thing. Keep trying to get some pics up, everyone here loves betta pics. :)

I have a few pictures of his half-flare. When he was flaring at a bubble in the airline tubing...and his bubble wand...and his reflection. I wish I could get one of him stalking the "betta" on the heater.
