The general rule of thumb is no other fish with a male betta, right?

Not even a few tetras? I've been wanting to get some more fish, and I'm not opposed to getting another tank for some. But I thought it might be fun to put a few with my betta, if there are any that he would get along with. Is it ever a good idea? Or too risky?

And also remember that you need at least 6 for them to school and be happy. So a few needs to be that number, not just like 3.

I just got a three gallon tank a few days ago. Still too small? Darn!

In anything under 5 gal just the betta, maybe a snail or a few shrimp.
In a 10gal you have more possibilities, however I;m not really sure what. Probably a school of tetras, or some corys (I hear them mentioned alot). Just have to be mindful of the bioload.
