Do I have an albino King?

I picked this guy up at Petco yesterday after seeing him there for 3 weeks. He laid at the bottom of his bowl and was so sad that I had to give him a good home. I did notice that when I got him in his knew home that he would bump into the glass and hit the plants so I thought he was blind at first. But then I got to thinking that with his really red eyes that the light might hurt him so I turned the light out tonight and watched him and he swam perfectly, he didn't bump into anything and he didn't hit the glass.

I included a few pictures of him and one of his home just for reference. Please note the light is off now. I didn't know that it hurt him.

NOTE TO EVERYONE: The Red you see in the eye of the fish, is not camera red eye, this is the color of his eyes in general without light.

It's hard to tell, but If he has red eyes then he could be an albino! Apparently all Albino bettas are blind. I have personally never had one though, but maybe someone else can tell you. :)

He is really pretty!

Yeah with the florescent light on in the tank the fish would ram into everything including the glass of the aquarium, with the light off, no problems. Trust me i have seen it, i thought myself he was blind at first.

Thank you! I don't know if he's blind or not but the light definitely hurt his eyes.

He may not be totally blind. I have read that albinos are sensitive to light so you might want to keep him somewhere where the light is very low. I have a cellophane that I believe is at least partly blind. He doesn't go after his food like fish normally do. He can't see it. I'm using a feeding ring so the food won't float all over the place and he knows to find it there.

Poor baby! He really looks like a sweetheart. Glad he found you!

He might be an occular albino, which is albinism that only affects the eyes ... but I've only ever had two occular albino bettas, both were light sensitive, and as time progressed ... they went blind.

Best of luck with him <3

Thank you! I just worry about his needs now. I'm going tomorrow to get a feeding ring for him. I'll definitely keep his area low light from now on.
