5 Gallon Tank w/ Tetra Filter

I have a new tank that came with a Tetra filter for 5-15 gallon tanks, and I was wondering if I need to baffle it, or if I even need the filter since I am only keeping one Betta in it.

The intake piece has pretty large openings that I do not want to risk my Betta being caught in it, so any help is appreciated.

I use a sponge to baffle that filter..I just rubberband it around the front of the outtake.
