Making a betta hammock

So you know these little leaf hammock things that they sell?

I wanted to make the same thing with this abalone shell:

How would I do that? Can I attach it using a suction cup? Could I do it without?

Plus, I've boiled it twice and baked it. Is that okay?

Well, this is my -opinion-. The Hammok selled at petsmart is light, so it floats where the suction cup is. It isnt above water level just a little under it, or on the tank floor. If that shell was on the Tank floorr i don't really know if your betta would see it as a hammok. I also read the petsmart hammok information, and it's supposed to be close to the surface of the tank. It also says that betta fish in the wild normally sleep near the surface. I would say you should glue it to the side near the top of the aquariumn. Maybe using glue isnt such a good idea sense you might want to take it off. Also just using a suction cup with the shell still make the shell sink?

It will raise the ph of your water as well because shells are made of calcium.

Damn... And I thought it was a pretty good idea hehe.
Yeah, I wanted to put it near the top like one of those leaf things. I don't want to risk my ph fluctuating, cause my tank is only 2.5 gal. Thanks for the input though :)

Is there some sort of sealant you could dip it in that would keep the calcium from seeping into the water?

Oh that's true.. maybe some kind of resin?

Something that won't hurt the water any. My initial thought is polyurethane, although I don't know how safe it is, if at all. But it's something you might want to look into?
