filter baffling with a sea sponge?

I just wondered if it would be harmful to use a sea sponge in my filter to slow the current. I would boil the sponge before inserting it, but I didn't know if it would be potentially harmful.

Do you mean the sea sponge that was once a living creature sea sponge?

I'd be worried about it leaching something into the tank. Aquarium sponges are relatively inexpensive and can be found at any LFS. Why not use one of those? Aquaclear sells some pretty inexpensive ones.
