It took 4 litres of water so it's about a gallon

As long as you don't put too many decor in there, he should be ok for a while- but I do recommend getting something bigger in the future. :)

I decided not to do it now. I'd rather have one in a larger filtered tank.

I know you've already made your decision (which I am glad you decided to hold off), but I just wanted to put my two cents and I'm sure you've already come to this conclusion. It's not necessarily a question of if you can keep a betta in a bowl or not. I'd say it was more of a question on whether you want your betta to survive or thrive? Some bettas prefer smaller bowls, this one person on here I was talking to in one of the threads even said one of her females was bought from a big tank in a sorority, but was more prone hiding.. and when placed in a smaller bowl, it felt more secure and came out more frequently. Although when she tried to upgrade to a 1.5g, the fish began to freak and hide again. Bigger tanks are definately a plus, but taking the fish's personality into account, to me, is definitely just as ideal.

I saw a real nice 2 gallon glass cookie jar at Wal Mart. I almost picked up one Sunday I just need to find a heater for it.

I've had bettas that lived for years in bowls.
As long as the water is a good temperature and you clean the water .
It should be fine : D
