Why is it?

Why is it that having pet fish is considered a hobby? People don't generally refer to having dogs or cats as a hobby.
Also, we don't say someone with a number of cats is a cat keeper, or someone with rabbits a rabbit keeper, so why is it term fish keeping?

If anyone else has anything that fits the title feel free to post it here. Both of these things just crossed my mind recently.

Why do you drive on a parkway but park on a driveway? ;)

I think its because fish are considered more ornamental than pets like cats or dogs.. Pets are also more personal, fish are not so much. They're usually around to look good..

What fighter girl said. It's sad, but true.

It's like how keeping reptiles is considered a hobby.
Personally, I hate the term "pet" because to me it feels like you are objectifying a living thing. That's why I call all my animals my babies, because that's what they are. I take care of them, clean up their poop, feed them, give them water, bath them, take them outside (my tortoises, not my Betta), play with them (for Betta, this involves wiggling my finger and "dancing" with him. For our Turtles and tortoises, this involves looking at them and cooing about how cute they are), and most importantly love them.

I think most people consider exotics a hobby because more work goes into keeping them, more specialized care etc., and it is rarer to people than cats and dogs.

i think it's because fish require a habitat that needs to be sustained.. requires a specific area to work in, like a puzzle or a stamp collecting book or rock garden. that's how i imagine the term came to be applied to it.

though i don't like that it is applied that way.

ShadowKat, I don't know that I hate the term pet, what it means to a lot of people yes, but i know I reffer to all my critters as my babies. I even reffer to my parents as their grandparents. I know a lot of times the term pet is used in a less then the rest kind of way. I just wish that all people would lern that though we control so many things in this world, that this by no means is the determining factor in us being the smartest and most "supirior" species.

I actually refer to them as babies too, although I have no problems with the term pet, a fish is your pet, you are it's human. :D
Once, I was getting late to go home and I exclaimed,"Hurry up, my children are hungry!" and people were giving me a lot of raised eyebrows lol! (I was 19 at the time XD)
