genetics questions

i see a lot of people buying pairs from the same spawn

how common is line/inbreeding with bettas? and are they pretty ressiliant to it like rats, mice, and most insects? i used to line breed rats and mice but i found after 3-4 generations the fertility was greatly compromised. just wondering about the same with bettas.

Most people breed down lines if they're looking for very specific traits. Downfall is, after a few generations deformities will start showing up. It's pretty common practice though.

Normal practice is to start out with a sibling pair and depending on what generation the breeder is on (always ask the breeder what generation the pair is!) you can breed 1-4 more generations safely. Up to 6-8 I believe (but I'm really tired so I may be wrong on those numbers.. OFL or Indjo may correct me).

If you're looking for something specific it's best to go with a sibling pair. Personally I like to buy my fish from the same breeder but different spawns so there's a little room for diversity and I don't need to look for an outcross as quickly.

ahh okay, so people do keep an eye on things. i do know it IS possible to make a stable inbred strain, i had one of african soft furred rats that was inbred from the last 3 people who passed on the strain to others, and they did fine, while when i tried to make my own strain out of a particularly beautiful golen pink eyed male mouse, i had beautiful colours spring from him and a pink eyed white female, but after 2-3 generations they didnt breed like ...well mice.

i bet my betta isnt well bred: hes a pet shop CT, and some of his rays have kinks in them o_O
