Having trouble swallowing?

I went to feed my Spoof this morning. I crushed up his pellets like I always do. When he put a piece in his mouth, he started shaking. His gills were flaring, but in small, short bursts. After a few moments of this, he spat out the pellet. Was he choking? He never has any trouble with the frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp.

it sounds like he was chewing it, or trying to spit it out. When you toss in pellets straight from the container, they tend to be hard, and can be difficult to feed and swallow. Try soaking them whole for about a minute or two before feeding. This softens them, making them easier to chew, and it also insures that they will not expand in the stomach and cause constipation.

Okay! Thanks!

If I soak the pellets, can I still crush them? Or will it have the same effect as crushing them?

Unless you have giant pellets, or a super tiny fish, they should be fine uncrushed. Of course, once you soak your pellets, they will expand, but they will be squishy and easier (at least for my fish) to grab hold of and eat. When fully expanded, if they are to large, you could just cut them in half or something along those lines.
