Turbulent Filter and Water Changes

Hi, I've recently received a Betta fish as a gift, and I have a couple questions. I've gotten him a 10 gallon tank with a filter and heater, but the filter makes his water very turbulent. What's a good way to dampen the flow from the filter?
Also, how often should a 10 gallon tank be changed, and how much water should be removed? I have the Betta and three Neon Tetras living in it.
Thanks!

Hey welcome to the forums~ :>

Nice tank you got your little buddy, 10 gal all by himself, with some friends too!. Bettas prefer still water, seeing how your filter creates a current I suggest baffling your filter. Here's a guide on how to baffle your filter, you can do it many ways; sponge, water bottle, etc.

Also, have you cycled the tank yet? I do not know much about cycling, since I don't really get it. Also I don't own a 10 gal so I don't know when and how much water % when you do your water changes. Maybe some other members can help shed a light on this.

Here's a thread on cycling: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=47838

Thanks! I followed the baffle guide. I initially tried to attach it while in the tank but my Betta is very curious and kept getting in my way :P

My baffle redirects the flow into a nearby corner. Is it normal for him to be particularly attracted to that turbulent corner? He hasn't left since I placed the baffle haha

There could be a few reasons for that in my novice view,

#1: Your Betta likes the current for some reason. Victor doesn't appear stressed or bothered by my filter output. It's not baffled, however it is adjustable and on its lowest setting.

#2: Is your heater near the output? Mine is 2 inches next to the filter (as per instructions for water filter positioning) In which case he may be putting up with the current to keep warm, or if the heater causes a dispearsion of current, he may be hiding where it is most motionless!

I may be wrong as I’m only just starting out, but my logic indicates that!

You're probably right Banicks, 'cause Jake does that too.

I put my heater right next to the output so the water that comes out gets heated. Which is where you're supposed to put it for even heating of the tank.
