Trying to decide

Ok guys, I got two pairs I can potentially breed about the middle of next month but I can't decide which combo I should breed.

Phoenix is an all red Crowntail about 6 months of age
Dragon is an all silver Dragonscale..not sure of his tail type...he's 5 months

Both males are building strong bubble nests and are interested in my girls.

The two females are Vivian and Ruby. Both are 6 months of age. Vivian already has the breeding stripes, but Ruby does not. I don't have actual pictures of the girls since they won't sit still long enough to get one. So I found some pics they look very similar to.

Vivian is a dark blue, almost black on her body and her fins are blue tipped in red.

Ruby has an orange body with red fins. Both are VT. Here's all the pics.

Your second male is a PK.
Your first female is what I call a classic fighter. She doesn't look like a VT.

Since I don't like mixing red to anything non red, so I'd go with first male to second female or second male to first female..... I'm assuming you're breeding for colors rather than fins.

Indjo, why don't you mix red to anything nonred? Is red a dominant gene? Or is that a personal preference for you?

Red is pretty dominant and hard to remove from what I've read.. That's why you see so many bettas with red washes..

Ahhh ok...I just figured that most breeders used red betta's, but I'm think I want to do a silver color with my betta's. Silver and blue would be an interesting combination.

I agree with Indjo's choices. Personally I don't like mixing CT with HM unless you have a specific goal in mind and are planning to cull hard on the raggedy fins that result in such crosses so my choice out of the fish presented would be the copper male and the wild-type female.

right...though the healthy culls I'm adopting out...just because they're not a color or shape I want doesn't mean they have to die. What is the best way to humanely euthanize them?

There are several different methods of euthanasia. Smashing/chopping, feeding to other fish, clove oil, and freezing although freezing is highly controversial. There are others but the first three are considered the most humane and quickest.

ok...I can't bring myself to chop/smash them, but I have fed culls to the adult fish since that's what would happen in a natural environment.

I didn't notice your signature before. If I were you I'd let the Oscars take care of them. It's the cheapest and cleanest method. Circle of life as it were.
