Tank question

I have the Marineland Hex 5 Tank, but no fish yet. I cleaned it out (without soap!) and got it all set up last week and I've had the filter that comes with it (Bio-Wheel!) on to get it ready, and this morning I woke up and noticed the water was kind of cloudy as if bacteria was building up. There is no source of ammonia that I'm aware of in the tank. I didn't add water conditioner because there's no fish yet and I won't have any until I go to Petco to buy the fish. What could be causing this? All I have in there is a heater, thermometer, and a SpongeBob pineapple house (plants and gravel are going to be bought with the fish). Maybe there's ammonia in my water source? I don't know...

Maybe an ant or two fell in? I feel like the chlorine in the tap water would kill any bacteria though...

I know that the hardness of the water can contribute to it's appearance.. I don't know if it would make it cloudy or not.. Maybe you should test your water and see.

Did you rinse out the filter media before running it in the tank? There is usually a lot of dust and particle build up in the various media types.

I'll test it when I get a kit at Petco.

Yeah, I rinsed it and shook it just like the directions said to.
